Neuropsychological
Assessment

Neuropsychologists use a clinical interview and targeted psychometric testing to gain an in-depth understanding of a person’s thinking, or ‘cognition’.

This may include diagnostic assessment, characterisation of cognitive strengths and difficulties, rehabilitation planning, and assessment of an individual’s capacity to make decisions.

An assessment may assist with:

  • Diagnostic clarification of cognitive, neurological, and neurodevelopmental conditions, including:
    • Understanding the cognitive effects of acquired brain injury
    • Examining memory difficulties
    • Diagnosis of Intellectual Disability, Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Medico-legal questions and court ordered assessments, including assessment of:
    • Decision-making ability
    • Parenting capacity
  • Characterisation of cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • Assessment of academic and learning profiles
  • Treatment and rehabilitation planning
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme applications or funding reviews

Kristian has particular interests in the application of neuropsychology to medico-legal contexts, and in characterising complex presentations.

Assessments can be conducted at the clinic in central Bendigo, via telehealth where appropriate, or at pre-arranged community or hospital locations across regional Victoria.

Please contact the clinic to discuss referral suitability, assessment structure, fees, and availability.

FAQs

What does a neuropsychological assessment involve?
A typical assessment involves an initial clinical interview, obtaining a corroborating account (e.g. discussion with a friend, support worker or partner), neuropsychological testing, a feedback session and a formal report.

Do I need a referral?
A referral is required for a neuropsychological assessment. This can come from a range of sources, including your GP, specialists, allied health clinicians, hospitals, lawyers, support coordinators or other relevant professionals, depending on the purpose of the assessment. In the first instance, you are most welcome to contact us directly to discuss whether an assessment may be appropriate.

What is the estimated wait time for a finished report?

Report turnaround times vary depending on the complexity of the assessment and the extent of additional information or collateral records required. As a general guide, we aim to provide the final report within 2–3 weeks of the assessment being finalised and all necessary information being received. For standard hospital-based capacity assessments, reports are generally completed within one week. Other urgent or time-sensitive referrals can also be prioritised where possible.

If a report is required by a particular date, please let us know when making the referral so we can advise whether this timeframe is feasible.

Is a neuropsychological assessment covered by Medicare?
No. Neuropsychological assessments are not currently covered by Medicare. However, a portion of the fee may be covered by your private health fund.
