Neuropsychological Assessment

A typical assessment involves an initial clinical interview, obtaining a corroborating account (e.g. discussion with a friend, support worker or partner), neuropsychological testing, a feedback session and a formal report.

A referral is required for a neuropsychological assessment. This can come from a range of sources, including your GP, specialists, allied health clinicians, hospitals, lawyers, support coordinators or other relevant professionals, depending on the purpose of the assessment. In the first instance, you are most welcome to contact us directly to discuss whether an assessment may be appropriate.

Report turnaround times vary depending on the complexity of the assessment and the extent of additional information or collateral records required. As a general guide, we aim to provide the final report within 2–3 weeks of the assessment being finalised and all necessary information being received. For standard hospital-based capacity assessments, reports are generally completed within one week of the visit. Other urgent or time-sensitive referrals can also be prioritised where possible.

If a report is required by a particular date, please let us know when making the referral so we can advise whether this timeframe is feasible.

No. Neuropsychological assessments are not currently covered by Medicare. However, a portion of the fee may be covered by your private health fund.

Please get in touch for our fee schedule as fees vary according to the complexity of the assessment. Kristian is committed to making neuropsychological assessment as accessible as possible, particularly for people living in regional Victoria.

We do, and very much enjoy the opportunity! We conduct assessments at a range of pre-arranged locations, including private homes, Supported Independent Living residences, and regional hospitals.

Psychological Therapy

No. You can engage in psychological therapy without receiving a referral first, but you will need to pay the full fee. If you get a referral from your GP with an associated Mental Health Care Plan, you will be eligible to receive a rebate for 10 individual sessions. Medicare also allows for 10 sessions of group therapy, which is worth keeping in mind if you use up the 10 subsidised individual sessions. Holth psychology does not offer group therapy at this stage (but we would love to! Stay tuned).

A single session costs $230. Holders of a valid Mental Health Care Plan are eligible for a rebate of $100.20 for 10 individual psychological therapy sessions in a calendar year.

Sessions run for 50 minutes, with time at the end for seeing to any admin tasks.

Yes. These can be arranged on request.

Excellent question. Getting ‘good’ therapy isn’t just about how competent the therapist is; what they studied, their natural inclination etc. It also comes down to whether or not you feel like you click with them, as no two people will necessarily respond to the same therapist in the same way. So, yes, irrespective of your past experiences, it’s always worth trying a different psychologist. They will have a new perspective on your lived experience which can be life changing. Therapy does involve talking, but there is much more to it than that. You should leave a session feeling like you’ve glimpsed a new way of thinking about an issue.

Yes. Standard approaches to therapy do not always fit neatly with how neurodivergent individuals think, process information or experience the world. Therapy can be adapted to better match an individual’s communication style, cognitive profile and ways of understanding themselves, others and the world around them. Individuals with ASD and/or ADHD can also be more prone to executive functioning difficulties and burnout. Therapy can help make sense of these patterns and find practical ways to make everyday life work better.
